Software programs that simplify the design of segmented and basket illusion wood turning projects. The software programs are easy to use and allow an iterative design process that is impossible with manual methods or software that does not propagate changes to the final design. These programs use 3D graphics to provide a realistic image of the project at all stages of the design process.

SegTurn - A Program to Design Segmented Wood Turning Projects
The SegTurn program is used to design wood turning projects that are made up of rings of various woods and sizes that are glued together and turned to shape. The program supports two different styles of segmented vessels, the first style (traditional) creates a vessel with rings of various thicknesses that typically have a small number of segments (typically 6 through 16) per ring. The ring segments are either solid wood or made up of various woods to form a pattern and can be wedges, blocks or staves. The second style (Painted) uses thin (1/8 to 1/2 inch) rings with a large number of segments of various woods per ring. This approach allows for a pattern over the entire surface of the vessel. With both styles the vessel can have open segments
The program also allows a combination of the two approaches within the same project.

The program provides a multi panel layout with a main panel that displays the views for data specification and different aspects of the design. There are also two side panels on the right that display a 3D image of the current vessel design and the current profile. As data is changed on the main panel the side panels provide immediate feedback.
The 3D Views allows manipulation of the image by zooming in and out and repositioning the image with the mouse

BasketIllusion - A Program to Design Basket Illusion Wood Turning Projects
The BasketIllusion program is used design wood turning projects that have patterns created on the outside and/or inside of the project by coloring cells with ink. The pattern cells are made up of small areas that are created by turning grooves and creating perpendular radial grooves across the surface. The grooves are darkened by wood burning before the cells are colored with ink.
The program can be used to create patterns on a wide variety of wood turnings such as platters, bowls and vases.
The program provides a number of initial profiles from which the user can then modify.
